Some English content by us

We like our website in Italian, but sometimes we feel we have to share our thoughts with the rest of the world too.
That's why we opened this area on "Beyond the Sea". Occasionally, you could find here some content of ours translated in English.
Hope you enjoy the effort, philes!

We're talking about The X-Files since 18 years

We’re talking about The X-Files since 18 years

In my mind I wrote this post many times, while I was stuck in traffic, walking by the sea or working out at the gym. I know this post won’t be so beautiful as those I only imagined, but the beginning of all those posts was always the same, and it’ll be the same this time as well.

Beyond the sea is online since 18 years. And it’s scary.

"Holy Cow" by David Duchovny

Honestly, I did not know what to expect from a book written by David Duchovny, titled “Holy Cow” and with the drawing of a pretty wacky cow on the cover. Well, I must confess that reading this debut novel turned out to be an incredible and exciting surprise page after page.

The main character – and narrative voice of the story – is Elsie, a cow living in a farm north of New York. Life is happy for Elsie at the farm, until one day she finds out the ugly truth about what fate awaits her: slaughter. Thus, she runs away. Away where? Why, to India of course, where cows are sacred animals and therefore untouchable. Elsie is joined in her adventure by Shalom, a Jewish pig who wants to go to Israel, and Tom, a turkey headed to Turkey. Using a map, a smartphone, skillfully operated by Tom with his beak, and a few disguises, the unlikely trio begins their journey, they get to JFK airport and board a plane headed to the other side of the world in search of a place where they can be safe.

"A Vision of Fire" by Gillian Anderson

“A Vision of Fire” marks Gillian Anderson’s debut as a writer. The book, written with Jeff Rovin, was released last October. There is no Mulder and Scully, of course, but I just could not stay away from a sci-fi book written by Gillian Anderson.

“A Vision of Fire” is the first of a three-chapter story titled “The Earthend Saga”.

The account is set in New York, present time. The main character is Doctor Caitlin O’Hara, a child psychiatrist treating children with serious psychic disorders. Caitlin O’Hara is a mother (of a deaf child), she is a single, independent, strong woman. It is virtually impossible not to visualize Gillian Anderson playing this character when one proceeds reading.

Dana Scully is 50!

Dana Scully

This is a time for “round” numbers. We just finished to celebrate “The X-Files” 20th anniversary, but here we are celebrating another round number that maybe is even more impressing.

Today, Dana Scully is 50. When I realized it, my first thought was: “Damn, I’m old”!
But this “50” seems to be different. I can’t imagine a 50-years-old Scully and I’d be very curious to know how Chris Carter or Frank Spotnitz imagine her nowadays.

Frank Spotnitz speaks to ''Beyond the Sea'' at the Rome Fiction Fest 2013

Frank Spotnitz attended the last edition of the Rome Fiction Fest in September. The Italian event paid its tribute to "The X-Files" 20th Anniversary with a screening of two episodes of the series and a talk with the writer (you can find the video of the complete talk on YouTube). In that occasion he also received the Excellence Award for his work on the show.

But... before all of this happened, Frank was so kind (and I'd say, very happy too) to seat down with us, the Italian fans, and chat about our favourite show ever. We talked practically about everything, from how he started to work on the show to XF3. Frank was very enthusiast (to say at least) to speak about "The X-Files", as any 'regular' X-Files fan does, and it was really a blast for all of us.

Finally, the result is out there now, for every Phile in the world who can't speak Italian. You can read the complete transcript of our conversation with Frank in this post.

Last, but not the least, I'd like to say "thank you" to Frank for everything he did with us and for us that day in Rome.

It was a wonderful day, indeed! Grazie, Frank!

Frank Spotnitz: a fan like us

Roma Fiction FestSo, here we are preparing ourselves to the next weekend events with both David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, but the truth is… it’s very hard to focus on all of that while we’re still thinking about our meeting with Frank Spotnitz at the last Rome Fiction Fest.

A fan between other fans, that is what Frank was that day (we’re working on the transcription of our chat, so stay tuned because we want to post it here as soon as possible).

I had (and still have) no words to describe this experience so I asked for help to my friends who were there with me. You can read some of their thoughts about our meeting with Frank here in this post. Enjoy!

Roma Fiction Fest 2013Today the Roma Fiction Fest website announced it will host a masterclass with Frank Spotnitz

There, he is going to talk about the beginning and the evolution of agents Mulder and Scully's adventures.

Everyone of us will be at the San Diego Comic Con

San Diego Comic Con - The X-Files 20th Anniversary The truth is we weren't expecting all these celebrations about the X-Files 20th anniversary at the San Diego Comic Con. It was really a big surprise.

The San Diego Comic Con was born in the '70 and was originally dedicated to the comics world, but it grew up and became the most famous event in the world about this genre. It's awesome that this year it'll host two panels about X-Files.

It's difficult to explain what a "comic con" really is to someone who never attended one.

"The X-Files Season 10" - The first issue

Mulder in "Believers"A bleeding woman is running away in an alley trying to escape from several shadowy figures. She tries to reach the FBI through her phone, but it seems something is wrong in the communication system. She stumbles and she falls to the ground. At this point we can see her face for the first time, as she speaks to the phone saying "My name is Dana Scully, I'm a former special agent with the FBI. I've been targeted."
The phone falls to the ground too and, as the shadowy figures come next to her we can see her frightened eyes.

If this would not be only a comic, at this point we'd see the X-Files opening titles with the famous Mark Snow musical theme.
