Great Expectations #1

After her BAFTA-nominated performance as Lady Dedlock in the BBC’s Bleak House, Hollywood star Gillian Anderson returns to Dickens as Miss Havisham in Great Expectations on BBC1. TV Choice caught up with her on location…

Miss Havisham is such an iconic role — did you always want to play her?As much as I’m familiar with the book it’s not in my mind as one of my favourites as it is for a lot of people. Miss Havisham had a real historical impact. In what way? There are various things that have come to my attention in terms of the Miss Havisham effect. Not just the potential addiction to loss and the pain of loss but ... [Continua a leggere]

He won his first role as Brutus in a school production of Julius Caesar. Though his first job after leaving school at 16 was as a sales clerk in a garage, he showed enough raw talent performing as Hamlet in a church drama group that he won a scholarship to Rada. “My father told me I should go into word processing”

Actor Gillian Anderson on slapstick, motherhood and the perils of Googling yourself.

You're starring in the slapstick comedy Johnny English Reborn, which seems an unusual choice for you. Was that part of the appeal?I generally like to make choices based on who I'd like to work with - and I liked the idea of playing the MI7 [spy agency] role with Rowan Atkinson. I think the thing that surprised me the most was how technical it was . . . I was aware of how I needed to work my technical muscle in a way that I hadn't before. Is the atmosphere on the set of a comedy film different from that on, say, a period drama? There's a heightened sense of comedy around and there ... [Continua a leggere]
