Gillian Anderson: From pop culture icon to costume drama queen

Gillian Anderson recently sat down with Gold Derby to talk about two of her latest projects, PBS' "Masterpiece" miniseries "Any Human Heart" co-starring Matthew MacFadyen and Tom Hollander, and the Encore miniseries "Moby Dick" win which she stars alongside William Hurt, Ethan Hawke and Donald Sutherland. Both programs are strong contenders for nominations at the upcoming Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards. In "Moby Dick," a re-imagining of the Herman Melville classic, Gillian plays Captain Ahab's heretofore little known wife Elizabeth, who until now has been little more than a foo ... Interview with Gillian Anderson

While her most famous role involved chasing aliens and government conspiracies with David Duchovny on “The X-Files,” Gillian Anderson has kept busy over the years with other projects. Her latest casts her as the long-suffering wife of Captain Ahab as he obsessively tracks down the whale that maimed him in Encore’s re-imagining of “Moby Dick” in a 2-part mini series that premieres Aug 1. Anderson sat down with CableFAX’s Michael Grebb at TCA in L.A. to discuss the role, her X-Files legacy and of course how we can start a campaign to get her a guest spot on Showtime’s “Californication.”

CableFAX: First of all, what drew you to this role?   Anderson: William Hurt was already attached, and they were in discussions with Ethan Hawke. That fact alone intrigued me. I think if they had not been attached, I might not have read the script. Then there was the script itself. I had not read the novel before. I couldn’t relate it to anything, so I didn’t know if it was a good adaptation of the actual novel. But I liked the script. I liked the story. I felt like I understood the character. And I thought it might be fun to perform it.   CableFAX: It’s ... [Continua a leggere]

Goodbye Mulder, hello Ahab: Gillian Anderson talks 'Moby Dick'

After forging one of the great female action roles on TV as (need I say it?) Agent Dana Scully in the “The X-Files," Gillian Anderson could have become a heroine of the American multiplex.  But instead, she’s become a mainstay of high-end literary adaptations, a fixture of “Masterpiece Theater.”  This week, she pops up in a lavish two-part adaptation of Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick” airing tonight and tomorrow on the premium cable network Encore. Part of a starry ensemble cast that includes Ethan Hawke as Starbuck and William Hurt as th ... [Continua a leggere]

A chat with Gillian Anderson

Although arguably best known for the time she’s spent playing Agent Dana Scully on “The X-Files,” Gillian Anderson has also found a home in numerous period pieces and literary adaptations over the years, from Charles Dickens’ “Bleak House” to Edith Wharton’s “The House of Mirth.” Now, she’s taking on Herman Melville, thanks to a small but pivotal part of Starz’s “Moby Dick,” where she plays Captain Ahab’s wife, Elizabeth. Bullz-Eye talked to Anderson during the summer 2011 TCA Press Tour and got a bit of insight into her character (who – we have been led to understand – has never before appeared in a film or TV adaptation of the novel), but we also checked in on the status of the next “X-Files” film as well as what we can expect from her in the upcoming “Johnny English Reborn.”

Bullz-Eye: How familiar were you with the original Moby Dick novel before you took this gig? Gillian Anderson: I wasn’t. I started reading it once I agreed to do the job…and got about ¾ of the way through. And at some point in my life, I’d like to finish it, but it, uh, hasn’t been at the top of my books-to-read-list. (Laughs) BE: During the panel, you said you’ve got about five minutes of screen time in the production. Seriously? GA: (Laughs) No, I’m in it a bit more than that. BE: Out of curiosity, were you aware that Melville’s wife& ... [Continua a leggere]
