Reopening the files! David Duchovny dished on his role as The X-Files' Fox Mulder and opened up about his relationship with costar Gillian Anderson in a new interview this week.
Duchovny, 54, was in Pasadena, Calif. on Thursday, April 2, to promote his new show Aquarius, but spent much of his time at NBC's Summer Press Day discussing The X-Files.
Speaking to Us Weekly and other reporters, the veteran actor was asked about the upcoming series reboot, due out as a six-episode miniseries from Fox. While he played FBI agent Mulder for almost 10 years on The X-Files, Duchovny said he's not sure how flawless his transition back into the role will be.
"I don't know if it's easy yet until I do it," he told reporters at the Langham Huntington Hotel. "But I am looking forward to it."
The Californication star said that he had little hesitation about signing back on for the reboot, though the show's final episode aired more than 12 years ago, on May 19, 2002.
"I've always wanted to - we always wanted to keep it going," he explained.
"We envisioned kind of a movie franchise when we stopped the TV show and we did two," Duchovny continued, naming the 1998 movie The X-Files and the 2008 film installment The X-Files: I Want to Believe. "The second one did well but I guess not well enough to do a third... I would have never done another 22 episodes of X-Files, but you know, we're going to do six. So it became like, 'Oh, that's like continuing the show in a way that we all can do at this point in our lives.'"
"Six to me sounds very doable at any walk of my life," the Emmy-nominated star added. "It's not a great hardship in terms of time. So I would hope it would be successful, I would hope we could do two, but right now, we're just looking at it as these six and we'll see what happens."
Duchovny's commitment to the miniseries includes a reunion with his former leading lady Anderson. The two faced endless dating rumors but stayed friends after their sci-fi show. Asked whether he and Anderson, now 46, stayed in touch over the years, Duchovny joked, "Oh yeah, we live together!" referencing earlier rumors that the two were shacked up together.
